Toller Film.

The symbolism of the apples is profound, of course, in this case with a Christian twist, as our protagonist is a minister. Apples, like all fruit, are a symbol of maturity, and the start of the film finds the cast in various states of arrested development.

The protagonist Ivan is living in complete denial, his reaction to the tragedy in his life, and refuses to acknowledge "evil" in the form of violence, pain, suffering.

His main adversary is a fellow that's been released from prison, a skinhead neo-Nazi, who covers up his own inadequacies with anger and bullying.

He's the Adam in Jensen's tale, the one whose symbolic task will be to bake a pie from the apples growing on the tree outside the church where all the drama takes place.

Though the film uses Biblical references, such as the story of Job, an initiation story if ever there was one, it's not for the fainthearted, someone who can't handle any violence or blood.

Jensen doesn't pull any punches, though he's not excessively gory or anything. There's lots of good dramatic energy here, though, and it's even more fun if you know the symbolism he's using, as I do!

Symbolic references abound, since Jensen uses not only apples and trees and Old Testament and New, but ovens and fire, tigers and physical ailments, crows, a psycho shoulder, sacred cups of coffee, and more.

The quirky tell-it-like-it-is doctor with his amusing diagnoses is our wise man, the adult in the room; he brings in a typically bare bones Scandinavian perspective that steps outside the drama, into a place where forgiveness is never needed, for that's just life.

I did review this film in my e book sold here on Amazon, linked here. One person found this helpful. But much more so--the often fairy-tale-pretty photography of landscapes and the ominous yet whimsical score signal that we're not meant to take anything here as "realism.

Which may make it hard to believe that "Adam's Apples" is largely a hilarious if very black comedy. More surprising still is that the story is ultimately, profoundly tender and uplifting.

Or at least that's how it effects me, every time. I've recommended it to friends both evangelical Christian rather to my shock, he recommended it to some of his fellow congregation and diehard atheist, all of whom loved it.

I I'd suspect that Jensen, like me, is an agnostic suspicious of organized religion but respectful of faith--especially the kind that's primarily altruistic, held by people who really think in terms of "What would Jesus do" rather than using their selective reading of the Bible as a pious, judgmental bludgeon.

Unlike most traditional fables, "Adam's Apples" doesn't spell out its final "lesson learned. How often do you see a movie that's simultaneously shocking and hilarious, then pulls off a last-lap switch to poignant, even inspirational transcendence?

Nonetheless, this film can't be recommended to those faint of heart--toward either subtitles or profane, upsetting content. It's not gratuitously nasty a la something like fellow Dane Lars von Trier's "Antichrist" a movie without any of this one's heart, let alone sound narrative construction , but it does push the envelope at times in terms of violence, sexuality and simply crass behavior.

Adams Apples is the blackest comedy that I have seen to date. I took a chance on this film not really knowing much about it, expect that is starred Mads Mikkelsen he is an amazing actor and that was enough for me.

In my opinion he steals the whole movie. This movie is a great find and it really does make you think about good and evil, but in a totally unexpected way.

One of the main characters, Ivan, only sees good in everything no matter how screwed up his life is and refuses to see it as anything but perfect becasue God loves him.

The other main character,Adam, sees himself as the embodiment of evil and proclaims himself so and sets out to show Ivan that in fact God does not love him and that is why his life is as totally messed up as it is.

What follows is the funniest jet black comedy, that keeps on getting blacker and funnier through out some crazy twists and turns.

Though do keep in mind this movie is not exactly what we Americans would term politically corret, and that is a very good thing indeed.

A movie well worth the subtitles. This movie touched me profoundly! I had rented this a couple of times but then had to finally purchase it.

To the few reviewers whom didn't "get it" Everybody sees things in a different way. Please believe me when I write that this is not a comedy The twisting of fates and the goodness and humanity of man.
