It also seems that stop-motion techniques have improved significantly since The Fantastic Mr. Fox, likely due to many of the same 3-D printing technologies used for Kubo and the Two Strings The mixture of 3-D stop-motion and 2-D animation in Isle of Dogs should also be commended.
In the end, I think my main qualm with this film was that it was a smidge too predictable. Perhaps this was due to the standard McGuffin of the boy trying to be reunited with his dog.
I watched it with my 12 year old boys, and I was truly surprised at how much we enjoyed it. The animation is unique and endearing, while the dialogue was surprisingly dynamic and nuanced.
Highly recommend. You probably know exactly what you're getting into by watching this Wes Anderson movie. Oddball characters mostly dogs speaking stilted snarkisms while trying to do their best under chaotic circumstances.
As one dog puts it mildly while going through a death trap: "I suppose if it was working correctly, we'd all be dead already.
Even the dogs' fur coats have character, with gnarled patches missing. The jerky models perfectly fit both Wes Anderson and dogs' quirky motion, giving a simple conversation some frenetic life.
It also lets Anderson play with shots in clever, fun ways: while musing on their grim predicament, dogs address the camera with the same dead-eyed fervor of an Ingmar Bergman film.
If I have any complaint, the movie is missing a little bit of meaning, some extra oomph. It's mostly a straightforward "Save the dogs" plot, but it keeps teasing as if there's a bigger picture.
Is it about our relationship to our longtime canine friends? Is it politics? Is it something about Japanese culture? Is it what's really the point of making Tracy a foreign exchange student?
While other Wes Anderson films celebrate something, like Moonrise Kingdom and freedom or Life Aquatic and purpose, Isle of Dogs feels like its just plot.

I found it disturbing and unsettling, and even my youngest dog who rarely shows any interest in films started at one point to bark at the screen. The animation seemed dated, the artwork felt almost crude, and the storyline was a bit of a cliche.
I would summarise it as an unsuccessful homage to a film style which has a limited target audience. Can you tell that I did not really like it?

Much like Fantastic Mr. Fox, this movie was a little offbeat and totally entertaining. I look forward to watching both movies again and I hope Wes Anderson makes more movies like these.
I saw some folks reference whether this was for children or not, but I watched it with my husband over a couple drinks. I never felt it was inappropriate, but I also never felt like I was watching a children's movie.
I recommend you check it out! Love, love, love this movie. Funny, touching, great voice work by Cranston, Goldblum and Norton.
Maybe best for ages 10 and up because there are a lot of subtitles. The humans speak Japanese and the dogs speak English.
