All are good though Farrell's Irish accent is far too thick to flatten , Depp probably being the best, but its all mimicry; Ledger is the one who does all the work.
His Tony, performed with a flawless English accent, is a great part for him, possessing all the characteristics of vintage Ledger — charismatic, droll, physically erratic, etc.
It's not on par with his work in Brokeback Mountain or The Dark Knight, but seeing how much fun he must have been having, seeing that wily smile, makes it a none the more fitting goodbye to the man.
The multi-personas also, despite sounding like classically contrived Gilliam, actually turn out to be the most credible part of the movie; they represent the most fascinating of the film's many mediations on reality Gilliam is always at best when toying with reality, and this is no exception - different parallels of the human psyche or at least Tony's are all challenged, and make for genuinely thought-provoking stuff.
The rest of the film, however, is a bit of a patchwork; provocative but hopelessly overwrought. As always with the Brazil director, you can't fault his ambition, but he's always been patently unable to neatly combine all of his ideas into a satisfying whole.
His biggest mistake is going contemporary. Gilliam's sense of humor, being that of a Python affiliate's, has always been well-authenticated by a theatrical and undeniably British zaniness.
But here, we get modern social satire in the form of Tony's revamped version of the group's travelling act, and we get conversational verbosity particularly in the poor improvisation of a pointless Verne Troyer , and it simply doesn't suit.
Better are the moments where a group of "violence-loving" coppers dance about in skirts or in the inebriated ramblings of Doctor Parnassus.
Why Gilliam didn't stick to his personal brand of appealing outlandishness is a shame, and a mystery, considering his fine cast of comically-endowed Brits, with glorious thespian Christopher Plummer at its head as the titular Doc.
Of all the actors on hand here, Plummer is the one who best excels with the material. Playing a man who has lived over one-thousand years, he manages to convincingly carry himself with the weight of that time, his sallow-skinned and ravaged face, heavy, sad eyes, and world-weary frown scarily naturalistic.
He's a heart-breaking character, and Plummer makes him an uncompromising presence. The notorious singer has never really had any good roles to work with in his career, and, in all fairness, his talents as an actor dictates just as much, but he's simply perfect here, his Machiavelli stealing all the scenes he wonderfully chews with his smarminess.
It's not exactly a creation of noteworthy prowess and neither is the character — the cavalier, smooth-talking, gentleman-like villain, who relishes fomenting, is very overdone , but he's just such a hoot and effortlessly magnetic.
He's pretty much the best thing here, and worth the admission price. Along with the cast, the visuals, a branch you can expect brilliance in with Gilliam, are a real saving grace.
The special effects in the Imaginarium aren't extraordinary, but that's the point; it's an accentuated, animated reality — one's greatest dreams and nightmares aren't supposed to be realistic.
And few images this year are more stirring than of a harrowed Parnassus wandering through a vast snow-plain, giving up his struggle at a crossroad sign that reads "High Road" or "Low Road".
It's a very entertaining movie, and thematically sound it manages to make existentialism and solipsism accessible , and endearingly whimsical in tone and style.
Unfortunately, it frequently degenerates into a muddle, the many ideas it juggles far too incoherently transcended. Thankfully, however, after the monotonous middle act, the movie picks up steam and the great Imaginarium sequences arrive to compel.
And, in the end, it's a sheer miracle that the movie got made; the fact that Gilliam didn't give up, that he persevered and single-handedly defeated one of the worst production catastrophes, and that he gave Ledger his swansong, is something truly amazing.

My central issue is the story is a little messy and it undoes the conclusion of the film, a little more explanation couldn't have hurt the film.
I have a feeling the film had to sustain a huge overhaul that was due to the death of Heath Ledger, it would have been nice to experience the true film and also another visit to the joker role.
The film has a true visionary at the helm and I think further viewings will increase my opinion, like most of his films. I like true original stories and having this unique little film in the world isn't the worst thing.

It was an honor to represent Heath. He was the only player out there breathing heavy down the back of every established actor's neck with a thundering and ungovernable talent that came up on you quick, hissing rather mischievously with that cheeky grin, "hey Heath is a marvel, Christopher Plummer beyond anything he's ever done, Waits as the Devil is a God, Lily Cole and Andrew Garfield , the very foundation, are spectacular, Verne Troyer simply kicks ass and as for my other cohorts, Colin Farrell and Jude Law, they most certainly did Master Ledger very proud, I salute them.
Though the circumstances of my involvement are extremely heart-rending and unbelievably sad, I feel privileged to have been asked aboard to stand in on behalf of dear Heath.
I have always loved Terry Gilliam's films. Their heart, their soul, their mind, always inventive, touching, funny and relevant.
When I got the call, it was a double tug. I liked Heath very much as a man and admired him as an actor. To help finish his final piece of work was a tribute I felt compelled to make.
To help Terry finish his film was an honour paid to a man I adore. I had a great time on the job. Though we were all there in remembrance, Heath's heart pushed us with great lightness to the finish.
It's not hard for me to imagine that if I ever look back on the films I've been a part of, and the stories I've had a hand in telling, one will stand out as so unique an experience, as to be incomparable.
This experience was the shooting of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The reasons for its uniqueness, sadly, are probably obvious to anyone who reads this.
Three of us had been asked to complete a task that had been set in motion by a man we greatly liked and respected as both a person and an artist.
Being part of this film was never about filling Heath's shoes as much as seeing them across the finish line. How I wish he had brought the film to its completion himself.
Of course, the whole crew felt this way. And the cast that we joined felt it, too. It was this spirit of grieving the loss of Heath, that Johnny and Jude and I joined.
But there was also a sense of dogged insistence. Insistence that Heath's last piece of work should not be kept in the shadow of the light of day. More than anything, though — more than the sadness and shock, the vulnerability and un-suredness as to whether it was right to complete the film or not — was an incredible sense of love.
A community of people, caterers and actors, electricians and makeup artists had been brought together in a recognized sense of love and obligation, for and to, one of cinema's finest actors and most generous of men.
It will be this sense of love amidst the sadness I will remember most. Such a gift and an honor, from Heath, to be a part of the trail that he left behind.
RIP Heath Ledger x [47]. Principal photography in Vancouver wrapped, as planned, on 15 April, but the production was soon beset by further tragedy when producer William Vince died of cancer, just two days after model shooting back in London had wrapped.
Gilliam recalled: "So I thought, it was third time lucky — they just didn't get me. They got the star, the producer, and they were going for the director, and the fuckers failed on the last one.

It just needed some human sacrifice. Gilliam also positively recalled people's commitment to Ledger's memory: "Everyone in the cast and everyone in the crew was determined that this film would be finished and everybody worked longer, harder and somehow we got through.
It was really He was beloved by so many. The film opens with St Paul's Cathedral in the background by the north bank of the Thames , and the first show is performed under the rail tracks at Green Dragon Court, directly next to Borough Market , with Southwark Cathedral in the background in Borough, London , on the south bank of the Thames , where the drunken lout molests the performers and then enters the mirror.
The next scene, with Tower Bridge in the background, is just east along the riverbank, by City Hall. Tony is found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge , and the very large disused building in which the following scene and several later ones occurs is the interior of Battersea power station , farther west along the south bank of the river.
The restyled show makes its debut in Leadenhall Market , where the stylish women gather to watch. Bray Studios near Windsor was used for model shooting and additional photography.
The remaining scenes were filmed in Vancouver. The fantasy scenes were filmed at Bridge Studios in Burnaby , while the charity gala occurs at the Orpheum Theatre , and the glass-walled "mall" is the Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library , the curved arcade being the library's entrance foyer.
Before The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was finished, the film had already received healthy interest from worldwide distributors and the film sold out across the world.
Gilliam said that Fox Searchlight Pictures and other distributors had declined to release the film in the US. According to Reuters , the film debuted at No.
