Five years after the events of the first part, a new family moved into Nancy Thompsons' former home. A teenage boy, Jesse, has recurring nightmares about Freddy Krueger.

He gets hold of Nancy's diary detailing her nightmares, which are strikingly similar to Jesse's. Jesse once again has a nightmare where he encounters Freddy, who tells him to kill for him and Jesse unsuccessfully attempts different measures to keep himself awake but the spirit of Freddy relentlessly forces him to kill by entering his body.

Freddy vows to take over Jesse's body to continue his vile crimes against the Elm Street residents. Soon, people close to Jesse start dying violently.
